Differences Between Low vs High Context Communication
In terms of communication context refers to the amount of information assumed, and necessary to understand the particular utterances.
Low Context Communicators
The context of the communication is not assumed to be known. Things must be explained clearly and unambiguously. Meaning must be expressed precisely.
That can make the low context speaker sound pedantic and even lacking in focus as everything gets explained even if additional explanations are unnecessary to the conversation.
High Context Communicators
The context for communication is assumed to be known. Hence it is unnecessary, even insulting to explain things and state meaning precisely. Meaning is taken from context, which need not be specified.
A good example of high context communication occurs between couples who have been together a long time, share many experiences, and so tend not to explain all the details. The danger, of course, even with two high context communicators is that they believe they are talking about the same thing, don't check that assumption, and in fact are thinking about completely different things.
