For Bloggers And Social Media Writers: Only Write When You Have Something To Say
Here's how to damage your ability to write clearly and well:
Write just to write. Write just to have something new on your blog. Write just to...well...fill space even if you have absolutely nothing to say, and no passion to say it with.
Seriously. When you write because you feel you ought to, and have to go searching for something to write about, chances are you are actually contributing to damaging your ability to write clearly and coherently. Whether its articles you write for article directories like ezinearticles, or for your own blog, what happens is that by using sloppy thinking processes and sloppy writing processes you get into terrible habits. It's really like the equivalent of playing a musical instrument badly, because you are too lazy or not motivated to work at playing properly. The more you write junk, the more likely you will write more junk. What's Your Reputation Worth?
Apart from leading yourself to go backwards in terms of your writing quality, consider your readers. You may have some followers who will read what you write regardless of quality or insight (Hi, Mom), but most people, particularly online will skim, find nothing of interest, and move on. People look for two things, particularly with respect to online writing. They want a) a connection, and b) something good to chew on mentally. The connection part (the social part) tends to be less content oriented and more about the tone of what you write. On the other hand, you can only go so far at building and maintaining a reputation if you publish junk, or basically regurgitate what you read on someone else's blog.Remember that few of us are all that interesting. Few of us, even many of the best writers, can't churn out excellent copy that actually has value to readers, day in and day out.
Consider writing less, but writing only when you have something to say. Your writing will improve, and so will your reputation.
