Complex Systems Applied To Real Life
System complexity is one of those words, like chaos theory that sounds like it's just for nerds, and those that like to talk in arcane words, and it's true that conversations about both complex systems and chaos theory can often make even the best of us reach for the aspirin bottle. What's interesting, though is if you strip down all the obscure terms used, you find that, particularly with complex systems, the ideas explain a lot of things in our "real lives".
That is because our environment contains more and more complex systems, and that the more complex these things get, the harder it is to keep things running properly, or ultimately to change things. For example, one reasons issues like world hunger are so difficult to "fix" is that there are probably hundreds, if not thousands of "causes" for poor nutrition worldwide. Which means there is no simple fix, because simple fixes can only address a fraction of causes.
Every wonder why search engines seem to be getting worse? Same issue. The more complex search engines need to get to cope with the sheer volume, and all the games people play to try to rank well, the LESS effective they get.
